THE ORIGINS

Originally the car coat was more usually termed 'motoring dress'. It emerged in the early 1900s, when driving was considered an outdoor sport. Cars at that time were often equipped with an open roof and drivers needed a practical garment that kept them warm and dry while driving, and not covered on their style behind the wheel.

MORE THAN A GARMENT

The car coat used to be a status symbol: after all, if you owned a car coat, you also had to own a car (or know someone who had one). This balance between usability and style has made the car coat more and more popular over the years. Nowadays it's still a versatile coat, in which you can do anything comfortable, but with class.

EVOLUTION OF THE CAR COAT

The car coat of yesteryear was usually longer than the current version and made from heavy fabrics, such as tweed and fur. In summer there were cotton and linen variants available that protected the wearer from the dusty roads.

The contemporary version is usually shorter and made of more durable, lighter and modern (often technical) fabrics. The light A-line design and wide cuffs of the original car coat have also been refined to a straight fit with more tailored sleeves, while maintaining the freedom of movement of the garment.
